This is out of date, see http://data.agaric.com/node/2356
Update: Grayside has an HTML file you can download and import into Firefox from the Organize Bookmarks dialog with more up-to-date versions of the below and more:
http://grayside.org/2010/06/firefoxs-custom-keywords-and-drupal
Simple step-by-step instructions:
Make a new bookmark.
Give it a name like "Drupal 5 API function search"
Give it this URL (changing the 5 to 4.7 or HEAD or, if you want to make the bookmark for future use, 6):
http://api.drupal.org/apis/5/%s
Give it a keyword like "api" and when you want to search for a Drupal function just type into your Firefox address bar "api function_needed"
Searched words:
Firefox keywords search Drupal

additional info on creating Firefox keyword shortcuts
Ben, you might want to begin this description by talking about how to create a keyword shortcut in the first place. The Firefox help didn't give me what I was looking for, so I had to find an answer for this on the web. This is what you have to do:
(1) Go to "Bookmarks/Organize Bookmarks".
(2) Recommended but optional: create a folder called "Keyword Shortcuts" that will hold all the keyword shortcuts you create.
(3) Choose "New Bookmark".
(4) Now fill in the "Name", "Location", and "Keyword" fields as Ben indicated in the instructions. (The "Location" field will hold the URL.) There's also a "Description" field that will help you remember the purpose of the shortcut.
(5) If you have created a folder called "Keyword Shortcuts", move your new shortcut into this folder.
