Connecting to a server that does security by IP address... finding your IP address

connecting to a server that does security by IP address

Both
http://whatismyipaddress.com/staticpages/index.php/lookup-ip
and
http://www.lawrencegoetz.com/programs/ipinfo/

Gave the same answer.

"Find my own IP address" is not exactly what I wanted. I needed the IP address my computer gives when surfing the public internet.

This is most definitely different from what I get at System Preferences » Network Show: Built-in Ethernet
192.168.1.42
Or on the sharing page:

Other Macintosh users can access your computer at afp://192.168.1.106/ or browse for "Ebony" by choosing Network from the Go menu in the Finder.

It seems to make a lot more sense to look up
