Notes from Christophe, circa beta 2
dear ben and dan, dear all,
we had a short chat this morning jason, pierre and me, and we propose to have an other one at 5pm paris or rome time (3pm gmt) and to have this kind of appointment every day in order to finish the website asap: http://dev.wsf2008.net/
i send you in this mail some remarks on the front page, and i copy a mail i sent yesterday about the action registration form.
in solidarity,
christophe
about the font page
map, there is a problem when you register something and when you surf, the map go to the right... the action supposed to be in paris are in the see, and when i registered something, the flag appeared 5cm on the right from the location i chose...
button action (find an action, join now and declare an action), 2 things,
1/ confusing to have "join now" and "declare an action", better to have a simple one "be part" or something like that...,
2/ much more important, i think it's wrong to have the action registration and navigation in the front page, if we succeed we'll have 20 to 30 languages and we know that most of the turkish, korean or japonese activists speak only their language; if they have a button in the front page they will believe they well find content translate in their language, which is impossible.... the best is to enter in the action registration and navigation by country, you enter in korea (written in korean in the front page) and you find a korean interface and the description of action in korean... (only the title accessible on the map will be in english or an other international language)... the only accpetable field in the front page could be thematic action registration and action, but that's not the main priority...
text in the page, if we have room, we can let it, but it's much better to give visibility to the countries links and to a tag cloud plus some photos... look, to have an idea to the 3rd slide of the wsf2008website.ptt file in http://groups.google.com/group/2008actionday?lnk=li
about the action registration form
Submit action, ok but good to add "You can write this title in several languages, but use, if possible, at least one "international language""
Multingual setting (language), I don't think it's useful here except, perhaps, for the thematic actions; for the others better to use by default the national language chosen by local activists
Keywords, ok but better to have "Tag or keyword" with "Use a coma between each tag or keyword "
Description, ok
Audience, useless for an action registration, only in the group functionalities
Subscription, useless for an action registration, only in the group functionalities
Location, several problems:
- by default the country list starts with "Afghanistan", that means all those who'll use to put their action directly on the map without filing the form will get a "warning" because they didn't fill the city, but nothing about countries… a lot of action will be located in Afghanistan J; 2 solutions possible
o by default an empty field, that means people will get 2 warnings, city and country,
o better, but that's related to the country entrance, if people enter by country, by default the country chosen is the country portal,
- there are 2 problems if you put action directly on the map (probably related)
o the map is not centred, when you zoom the map go to the right…
o when you "click" on the map, the flag appears at a wrong place, to the right too,
- it could be good to have some general info at the beginning of this section, as such "You can register your action on the map by 3 ways, with the precise latitude and longitude if you know it, by the address, but this function works only in some countries or dragging on the map with the mouse. In all cases, you will have to fulfil country and city, those information will be on the description form on the map, with your action flag."
File attachment, I don't understand what kind of file you can attached, need some information!
Missing functionalities, it'll important to have not written content, photos and videos visible from the map at least for photos, (with the flag), where to put them?
