Giving this talk:

Social Networking continues to grow both in personal use as well as the enterprise. However, the dominate networks of today exist primarily as walled gardens - silos of users. The Federated Social Web is a growing movement to connect users across networks to allow following, status updates, favourites, etc between users on different systems. OStatus ( is an open protocol we've developed at StatusNet ( to implement these features within our software. We'll cover who's implementing it today, and what kind of control a federated model gives companies and individuals. We'll also give first steps on what you can do to create your presence in a federated social web.
