Interplay between Drupal and human progress

Prominent Drupalistas reflect on our community's social conscience:

Kristof Van Tomme, Pronovix

Drupal is unique in that it is both a tool for social activism and a
skill that enables people, regardless of their background to build up
a decent living in an awesome community.

Incremental improvements make Drupal's code awesome

A fix was recently committed to both Drupal 8 and Drupal 7 to use #attached for block_admin_display_form() instead of drupal_add_css(). It only came up in my "Your issues" block on my drupal.org dashboard because, it turned out, i was the one who had initially complained about it. And that's all i did- looking for core examples to tell readers of dgd7.org how to write good code, i noticed core was in fact doing it wrong.

Drupal as-a-useful-distribution development productivity - Robin Monks

Drupal core would be split into the required components, with all the optional components separated out, along with these 10 or so critical contrib modules to become this base distribution.

Each of these components has a driver, someone who looks after their component, as well as co-drivers who might only be focused on improvements for a certain version or adding new features. This group of people talk regularly to coordinate efforts and are steered by the distribution’s (Drupal’s) driver (Dries or someone else who manages a specific release).

This proposed session didn't make it on the schedule, but we'll be perfecting this concept which we can't help but write about and take notes about and wax political about.

Drupal as a Relationship with a Happy Ending

Notes from the presentation by Julia KM:
http://www.juliakm.com/drupal-love-story

Great security
modular
core very lightweight
(
used by lots of smart, helpful people

The Rough Period
not all modules are created equal - must evaluate quality
CRM + E-commerce = Pain

Hacking core until
i decided to write my own menu system - not a good idea
always a good idea to work within the constraints of Drupal
