Pondering some partial answers
I haven't seen an answer for this after quite a bit of looking. I'm considering two possibilities (and would love comments if anyone thinks these are good or bad approaches):
1) the popup bubble is a set amount up and to the right of the point on the map. Dynamically change that so points in the southern hemisphere have a box starting on the equator, and points in the northern hemisphere point at the bottom left of the map. Hopefully this will keep the bubbles inside the map well enough that automatic resizing doesn't have to happen.
2) Replace the pop-up action completely. Implement a different on-click behavior. Not yet sure where to hook into the process.
