Your mom likes IE6!

Your mom likes IE6. It is true. Most likely, it is because it is all she knows. So, to all the mom's out there, we love you and appreciate all you have done. We would just appreciate it more if you changed your browser and upgraded to Firefox. But, we would settle for IE8, even IE7.

You see, unlike some others here at Agaric, I roll Windows. Love me/Hate me I care not. For me, it is simple, affordability versus performance. Most designers buy Macs because they want the hipster Mac experience. They don't realize that business is all about profit. My PC provides the same amount of power as a Mac for a fraction of the cost. But, I digress.

Getting back to your mom, she likes IE6. Why? Because she purchased her 5 year old computer at a time when XP was the dominant operating system. Now, XP has, in conjunction with Windows 2000, provided a near decade of being Microsoft's flagship product(s). What does this have to do with Drupal Theming? IE6. IE6 was rolled out in the OS and unlike Firefox, Chrome, Opera and a host of other browsers, it is embedded in the OS.

Most users never think to upgrade their browser manually, and, are less encouraged to do so when their browser is part of the OS. Once again, how is this relevant? Well, drupal theming takes twice as much effort as traditional XHTML/CSS presentational layer development. And, with IE6, you have to be just THAT much more careful.

IE6 is like the coach's son. He played all the time from TBall through Little League and into High School. Only, now, in high school, has he had his true talent, or lack thereof, exposed. All the other children have surpassed him and it is clear where the talent lies. You see, up until recently, with IE7 and now IE8, Microsoft refused to play by the rules for browser rendering. While they are still not perfect, many steps have been taken to improve Internet Explorer.

Here at Agaric, we recognize that IE6 still needs support. But, it's days are numbered. Around here, we like floating, we like transparent PNGs, we like marvelous and copious amounts of JQuery, we like Flash and XML, we like semantics ... semantically speaking. But, the truth is, we like change. We like change because change represents progress (at least in the tech world). We like change because, well, as Inspectah Deck of the Wu-Tang Clan said, "Change is money too."

The Twitter Discussion

linclark wondering why 'your mom' or 'your grandma' is always the shorthand for technologically illiterate, not 'your dad' or 'your grandad'

dhakimzadeh@linclark did this have something to do with tom's post? you make a good point, we may be biased just because our moms aren't tech saavy...

linclark@dhakimzadeh that did spark it, tho I hear it a lot... I have a particularly tech savvy mom (was programmer) and gma, so I always notice it

I3IVIIVI@linclark @dhakimzadeh http://tinyurl.com/df9xyy is sexism and we will force the @agaric responsible to do IE6 compatibility work

linclark@I3IVIIVI I think that is a fitting punishment

IE6 notifications

You might want to check my jQuery plugin to notify moms to upgrade :)

Opera

i like opera as i recently updated my version of it to test sites in. its relatively smooth. the truth is, at this point, i don't care about which browser i use in the sense of rendering a site. i care about which is going to mess up my standard method of operation. i don't want my browser to auto-fill the search bar with sites ive never been to trying to guess where i am going. i do not go to that many "new" sites.

Depends on the mom

Now if the mom had a blog/website she would have to use Firefox with the SEO for Firefox plugin (It's a no brainer). Most moms I know don't like change when it comes to their computer therefore IE6 is the preferred option because they don't want to break anything. Tabs have to be the best improvement in later versions of IE and would provide the biggest benefit to the average mom (Sorry! There are no average moms).

Love the IE6 high school

Love the IE6 high school coach's son analogy! So TRUE!
Totally agree with you on the choice of browser! I use opera and its relatively smooth, but using windows was just as good. Macs are good but definitley over rated!

Hah my moms still on IE5 anyway!

great post

There are tabs on IE7?

I agree with IMS. Everyone in our house uses Firefox except our mom, but we have upgraded explorer for her. She has been using it for six months now but we still haven't persuaded her that she can open a new tab instead of starting the browser a second time.
