How to list organization for identification or affiliation purpose

we are in a site where organisation is not an entity so organisations only exist as list of people profile , declared independently by each person
Benjamin Melançon 5:16 PM
Exactly.
5:16 PM
It would be a click or two away of course, but not displayed there.
Pierre George 5:16 PM
there is a need i think to give directory service to the users
5:17 PM
who are the people form my organisation, form my network form my city ... you can find a start of this in wsf2008.net
Benjamin Melançon 5:17 PM
Yes, I plan to use a taxonomy (category) that lets people define everything themselves
5:18 PM
But also use autocomplete, so that if you type the first few letters of your organization (or even type it without a "the" when someone else used a "the", say)
5:18 PM
and wait a second your organization will come up if someone already entered it
Pierre George 5:18 PM
that is great!
5:19 PM
now may be there could be some implicit mailing lists where i can post a message to all people mentionning orgxx as their organisation
5:19 PM
i am just looking at ways to give some exisitence to the organisation which are not entities in the site
5:20 PM
but keeping a light profile; based on the "directory"
5:20 PM
not as a stuctural entity
5:21 PM
this site is for action /initiaitive so it is not a place of collective expression of organisation, but it may need to be a place where people having co organised something can safely edit it (i think of the activty front page )
5:22 PM
i am drifting away ... but all this has to do with accountability
Benjamin Melançon 5:23 PM
Yup, I think we had talked about other ways to do this that were more complex, but I think the very thin layer of an organization name is what we want-- organizations can tell everyone to sign up with the name in a standard way (we may have to encourage use of "Such and such OF INDIA" and other such qualifiers)
5:25 PM
The same name can then be attached to an action by the initiator, and clicking it can get you a list of both people and actions associated with it.
5:26 PM
To also give specific people control of a description of that organization, or who uses it, would both be a bit trickier. I can see the way the former could be done - http://drupal.org/project/cmt - but would not prioritize that work
Pierre George 5:27 PM
staying with the thin layer name idea...

you mean i see that one coeditor of an actiion is linked to orgxxxx and i can click on this word and get access to all people having mentionned org xxx as ( one of ) their orgs, and where they are located

there should be some benefit/functions associated to the "gathering by field names
5:28 PM
for isntance the ability to send them a collective message through the site not through a real mailing list
5:29 PM
see which are the actions in which someone "mentionning" orgxx is coeditor
5:29 PM
that give and idea of the spread and the actionprofile of orgxxx during GM2008
5:30 PM
that kind of things...just sorting the regisration filet and the acitvity coeditor file
5:31 PM
limiting to coeditors (if this notion is accepted) would make things lighter
5:33 PM
... i do not know how far we can go technically with this ... i am just playing around with the idea of that GM directory which gives a lot of visilbity to all - "who does what where mentionning which organisation name "
5:33 PM
....
Benjamin Melançon 5:33 PM
1. Sending a group message based on org: Good idea, has to be implemented somehow. Shouldn't be that hard.
5:34 PM
2. No problem, once we introduce the concept of co-editor!
Pierre George 5:34 PM
1-not a mailing list , just a service avaialble on the site ...
Benjamin Melançon 5:35 PM
3. Can list all people signed up as affiliated with the organization as well as all actions etc. directly associated with the organization. With a fair amount more work we could include "things commented on by people affiliated with this organization" and such
Pierre George 5:36 PM
1same message sending -can be based on any of the basic fields org - network - city - country -
Jason 5:36 PM
hi everyone - I'm here, I'm catching up with what you've been discussing
Pierre George 5:36 PM
HI jason
2- coeditor we talk later..
5:38 PM
3- try to get the max effect with minimal work - if we have a list of coeds for an activity then we can find the list of initiaitives/acitons where someone of orgxxx is a coed
5:38 PM
i assumed we have coeds...in this example
5:39 PM
but that would be the GM directory - based on the "partiicpation" profile and the activity accountability structure
5:39 PM
partiicpatiojn=signature
Benjamin Melançon 5:40 PM
Technical side, I was going to let people edit, and they become co-editors-- but we'd have to do a little more coding to tease this information out of the system.
5:40 PM
Or we could let only the creator of a document edit it, and add people as coeditors.
Pierre George 5:41 PM
even if we want mobilization it is important for unorganised people to know which are the organsiation which are clearly and significantly involved in an activity organisation /calling etc...
Benjamin Melançon 5:41 PM
yes.

Resolution

Making a user associate with a taxonomy, presumably by using usernodes, makes this really easy to do. Multiple organizations? Just separate them with a comma, please. (If your organization has a comma, please put quotation marks around it, for instance "The Fund for Authentic Journalism, Inc.")

To apply taxonomy to user profiles we will need to implement profiles with usernode, and not use the Drupal default profile functionality.

Comments

hi, just a small comment to

hi,

just a small comment to remind you we decided that the organisation field will not be compulsory. it's ok to help people showing them the name of the organisation when this one is already registered in the website, but the only compulsory fields we decided to have are:
- name or nickname (i saw the discussion on this topic, and i think the best is to propose to the people to use the name which is the most well-known by the others),
- city,
- country.

Yes, the organization field

Yes, the organization field is optional and nothing here was meant to suggest that it was. Thanks for the clarification.
