Alternatives to GoLightly: Agaric or any Drupal shop
I haven't looked into GoLightly much, but I recently registered with NTEN.org (which uses GoLightly) and have a sense of its functionality, so I checked out the people behind the software:
GoLightly's pricing model is designed to meet the budgets of nonprofit organizations. There are no hidden charges — our fees consist of:
* A one-time setup and consulting fee
* A monthly fee for hosting and supporting your community networkTwo Tiers of Service
Basic Community from $6,000 (see pricing below)
Everything you need to get your online community up and running. Includes: Community Home Page (easy to update), Searchable Member Directory, Unlimited Groups, Unlimited Email Lists, Resource Library, all with your Branding
And then $300 a month to keep it all going!
That's not the kind of prices that "nonprofits" I want to support can afford.
Most important point:
That's way too much money to spend on community-building software that doesn't belong to the community. Contact Agaric or find another Drupal development group to meet your organizational needs (nonprofit or forprofit). Go lightly, indeed, when considering expensive, closed-source solutions to our group problems and needs that are being solved, right now, with open source free software.

Agree and Disagree
Hey,
I agree with you on the pricing issue that $300 is a lot of money to spend for small non-profits but at the same time, I am not sure what the open source arena has to offer for a community software? I am just getting started on looking at options of a community related software for non profits, I agree that my knowledge is not extensive in that domain but I have started researching on that . Currently Golightly looks ok but definitely anything built on LAMP platform which is most of the technology that non profits use can be equally effective.
Thanks for your article though and feel free to get in touch for more sharing of opinions in this matter.
