Why Agaric is putting so much effort into InternetBarContest.org

The way we see it, this is a contest about bringing trust to the online world and justice to the whole world.

We hope you'll get involved too.

A link on the user page to admin user list.

Agaric wants a link on user pages to the administrative user list for administrators.

A link on user profile pages to a much better-formatted general user list (with links for editing for those with privileges) might be an even better solution.

So maybe the two needs – for easier navigating through users, to list, and back, and for a good presentation of user profiles.

Open Content and the State

Here's a post I made to a non-profit centered "Open Content" discussion group started recently. The extent to which I should have been working instead of writing this is quite impossible to describe.

I'd like to suggest early in the discussion that we can't talk too much about open content without tackling the laws and economics that create a closed-content alternative.

How to draw straight lines in the GNU Image Manipulation Program

Yes, I had to Google for this. Does this read as satire, or am I just taking things too personally?

The picture with the shift key circled could use more explanatory text on how to press it, though.

Agaric and Not-for-profit Organizations' Drupal Sites

There was a huge Drupal for Nonprofits thread which I posted to. It's funny, we bill ourselves as almost aimed at nonprofits, but a lot of our work hasn't necessarily been for nonprofits– although always for the underdog!

Agaric Design Collective has worked on a couple...

Alternatives to GoLightly: Agaric or any Drupal shop

I haven't looked into GoLightly much, but I recently registered with NTEN.org (which uses GoLightly) and have a sense of its functionality, so I checked out the people behind the software:

GoLightly's pricing model is designed to meet the budgets of nonprofit organizations. There are no hidden charges — our fees consist of:

* A one-time setup and consulting fee
* A monthly fee for hosting and supporting your community network

Items in green are done (but need testing).

Key Points: General Stuff

  1. The website should optimized for all browser types – I think there is some kind spec we can follow to make sure of this
  2. The site should be optimized for portable devises. I’m told that our current site does not work at all on blackberries etc… (this is important) – Provisionally done. There's no such thing as optimizing for everything, but the main content loads first. To truly have best practices for mobile devices, we would need to make an alternate theme for small-screen that shows less at a time. This would be an additional cost, but we'll also continue to make sure the current theme works in phones and PDAs etc.
  3. Search engine optimization – if you don’t know how to do this let me know I’ll pass on some instructions – this is important, we want google (despite their issues) to pick up our articles when people search from something that is in the title or tagged

Content Management System

  1. allow tagging. This should help for searching, as well as search engines
  2. Allow us to post in multiple sections – see old system (it would be great if we could post to 3 sections at once – EG. Commentary, video, and politics)
  3. RSS feeds for all sections, and perhaps for countries (Canada, USA, Japen etc…), and even popular tags, we will have to take or check off the correct country when we post
  4. have a tool box for each article like this:
    • Email to a Friend
    • Print
    • Email Editor
    • Receive COA News headlines by e-mail - done, but in my opinion we should try to keep the toolbox article-specific
    • EASY ADD: bookmark page/site
    • EASY ADD: Syndicate
    • Community tags?
  5. List related stories at the bottom of each article, like this:
    Related COA Stories
    • Kyoto Protocol Not Enough
    • Another Hypothetical Article
    • A third hypothetical story
    or perhaps something like this:
    Also in Environment:
    • Can Apple and Tech Industry be Green?

Don't Use Vista: Microsoft Claims Another 4 hours of Productivity

Vista hell.

When Dan attempted to hook up external sound, Microsoft Vista somehow locked out even the superuser from access to any sound. He spent hours on tech support calls, they did the remote access take over the computer thing, and ultimately told him to do a complete fresh install anyway. Frighteningly (if fortunately) just five days after getting the computer.

Agaric Wants a Simple File Check-in, Check-out Drupal Module

The Request, by Brian Corbin of WHE Games:

Easy way to check out files for editing, and then deposit them back? So that while someone is editing it, no one else can.
* word docs, spreadsheets

The Search:

A question/request at a post about Private and Public File Handling

Resolution

No colons after question marks in polls and profiles

Agaric's searches:

Drupal poll module no colon
fix Drupal poll module to not add colon after question mark
Drupal poll module should not add colon after question mark

Solution!
http://jaspan.com/removing-unwanted-colons-form-field-titles

Note that the code, with the same function name, can safely be added to template.php in your theme.

and it should be fixed in core in Drupal 6.
