Pro Drupal Development, at 571 pages for 23 chapters (page count excludes introduction and appendices), averages 24.8 pages per chapter.

It also has, as a very rough estimate, about 420 words per page without graphics or diagrams.

The Definitive Guide to Django has 172,988

Over 538 pages. Including everything. For an average of 321.5 words per page.

Anyhow, around 8,000 words per chapter seems right.
