Upgrading Debian

This was tried on a completely empty installation. If it actually matters, you are advised to consult your nearest neighborhood GNU-Linux sysadmin.

And of course your first step would be to back up everything.

ol>

  • Back everything up, including a list of installed packages. First two commands if necessary:

    cd /
    mkdir backup
    dpkg --get-selections > /backup/installed-software.log

    dpkg --set-selections < /backup/installed-software.log
    dselect

    Check what you have now:

    cat /etc/debian_version
    <blockquote>4.0</blockquote>

    Kernel:

    uname -mrs
    <blockquote>Linux 2.6.18-5-xen-686 i686</blockquote>

    Update the package list:
    apt-get update

That gives a good bunch of output.

    apt-get dist-upgrade

    If all is well...

    reboot

    More from

    cat /etc/debian_version

    Check dem logs:

    top
    netstat -tulpn
    tail -f /var/log/auth.log

and tons of other log files in /var/log/.

Use ctrl-shift-C to get out of tail view.
