ok, then they can just use 'unpublished' -- that's the only clean way without a lot of Drupal pain i think-- the heaviness of an access control module.

Actually it would be pretty easy to add a CCK checkbox field and use that to determine if the content shows up in views and such. But it would still come up in search.
