The Drupal Association, or failing that another representative of the Drupal community (that has money) like Agaric's proposed PowerToDrupal project, has an implicit commitment to the people who've made it possible. That is, Dries or Chx or Killes or Webchick (or anyone on this page) should never be penniless on the street.

Maybe that's completely impossible for the European developers, but it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility for U.S. and third world contributors.
