Don't Use Vista: Microsoft Claims Another 4 hours of Productivity

Vista hell.

When Dan attempted to hook up external sound, Microsoft Vista somehow locked out even the superuser from access to any sound. He spent hours on tech support calls, they did the remote access take over the computer thing, and ultimately told him to do a complete fresh install anyway. Frighteningly (if fortunately) just five days after getting the computer.

And now Dan has to uninstall all the junk Microsoft Vista and Dell pre-installed. (Easiest way, incidentally, is simply to say "no" to the license agreements and an uninstall option is presented right there.

Moral of the story:

SWITCH TO UBUNTU!!!

The problem was actually with the driver for the SIGMATEL HD audio chipset.

Dell uses these because they are cheap, mostly.

Anyway, the audio driver is not written for Vista, but a port of the XP driver, and it was never good to begin with...
