Creating cities as required

I am really leaning toward trying to create cities and countries as a taxonomy.

As a community-managed taxonomy.

With instantly showing up, but the ability to merge later.

A location-enabled vocabulary. Or a node-linked vocabulary, with the nodes location-enabled.

The benefits:

• autocomplete on countries and their synonyms, activeselect or autocomplete for states or provinces, or maybe go straight to cities?
• Associated other content with these locations easily.
• Most of all, no need to try to define cities (towns, villages, etc.) for the entire world ahead of time.

The alternative is if someone can provide a full list of cities and towns in the world.

On the other hand, people will have to provide their town, state/province/whatever, and country through the location module or otherwise provided to a mapping API.

Maybe I can write my own interaction with Google Maps.
