Per content type, per role Drupal access control

Searching for this led Agaric to this long thread on Access Control Within A Specific Content Type?

which led to:

http://drupal.org/project/nodeaccess

Doesn't have an official release for Drupal 5 at this time and the issue queue has a lot of (seemingly contradictory) bug reports and support requests filed against 5.x-1.x-dev: http://drupal.org/project/issues/nodeaccess

The issues aren't assigned to anyone either; perhaps the maintainer fled in terror.

Also, it does more than we need.

Perhaps Agaric could help refactor it into two modules: one that provides the per node type "default" access control and dthe other that provides the "Grant" tab for super-fine grained control.
