Background color only the width of text, not spanning entire div

Agaric wants an easy way to use CSS or modify some Drupal theme templates if necessary to make background colors only be as wide as the text, and not the whole page or column, in certain instances.

themes, theming Drupal, background behind text only
css text background color div width of text
only thing to try is to make the div inline

This is particularly for the add content, user, and other non-node pages on CarlitosNY.com and any theme that uses a photograph as the background.

Dan's also supposed to be giving me sort of transparent, sort of opaque (translucent isn't whe word, what is it?) backgrounds which would be very cool.
