E-mail subject: Please help me with views???

Hi Ben,

My name is Tony and I have been reading allot of your tutorials on your
site and the reason that I am emailing you is that I have a problem with
views and I was wondering if you could be so kind in helping me out?

Heres the story:

I have a custom content type called "sites" in that I have added 2 CCK
fields call "URL" and "Thumbnail" I have created a view for this and I have
a block for my front page to show only 10 of the latest sites entered in.
Now I got that all looking the way I want it to and I am very happy with
that.

Now this is the part here I hope you can help me out :)

On my menu I have a link called "Links" and once you click that I want to
show all the links that I have entered in, at the moment I have a view that
I have also set as a page but when I go to the links page
(http://localhost/links) then I get a the block content that is embedded in
my page and I cant customize it.

So how can I customize the "links" page with the content views fields I
want? I just cant get my head around how to do it and its just driving me
mad.

So I hope you can take the time to help me Ben.

Thanks allot for reading my question and thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Tony

Hello Tony,

I'm glad you found some of our notes of use. Care to drop us the links to the pages you've been using, so we can pay some extra attention to them? (And the search terms you used to try to find stuff, so we can elp more people find it?) And finally, may we post your question so as to make our response public?

Sorry for the long delay in response[.] Already figured it out?

If I understand correctly you have one view, and you want one set of fields to show up in the block, and another set of fields to show up in the page version of the view.

This isn't possible with Views at the moment, but what you can do is create a second view with the same filtering options ("clone" it) that has the fields you *do* want to show.

Extra tip, via Lullabot tip 37: If you give any number of block-only views the same page URL, their "more" links will all point to the same page.

Do you know about IRC? http://freenode.net/

With an IRC client you can ask questions in #drupal-support on irc.freenode.net for generally much faster response!

Hi Ben,

Thank you so much for your email and I am happy you found the time to write back. At the moment the site I am doing is on my localhost and since the site is not ready I am unable to upload it. However since I wrote to you last I did get a bit further with the views but I have to say that I do still find it but hard to customize, I did use the clone to create a page view for my view and this now works and I am very pleased with the outcome.

I think its a grate idea if you could maybe publish an easy to understand guide to views, since I am a designer it was hard to get my creative mind around the code but with allot of coffee and determination it was possible. But I do know that there are allot of people out there just like me who find views and creating a custom template hard to do.

My plan is once I have created my site with Drupal I then want to create a superb theme(s) for the community!

Thanks again Ben for the email and please do keep up the superb work you do!!

Best regards,
Tony

P.S. I am checking out the IRC now...
